140 St Georges Terrace, Perth

140 Saint Georges Terrace in Perth is a 30-story skyscraper, which opened its doors in 1975 and reaches a height of 131 meters (430 feet), making it an imposing figure against Perth's urban backdrop. At the time of its inauguration, 140 Saint Georges Terrace claimed the title of Perth's tallest completed skyscraper, a distinction it proudly held until 1976. This prominence was short-lived, however, as Allendale Square was opened the following year, surpassing it in height. Despite this, the building remains an essential part of Perth's architectural heritage.

The design of 140 Saint Georges Terrace is centered around a service core, featuring a concrete core that houses lifts and two stairwells, a common feature in skyscraper design that enhances structural integrity and safety. The tower's square cross-section is further defined by load-bearing columns at its perimeter, a strategic choice that enables the office floors within to be mostly free of columns, thereby offering flexible, open-plan spaces that are highly valued in commercial real estate.

With 28 office levels, along with additional spaces such as the ground floor, basement levels, and a plant room, the building offers substantial commercial space. Interestingly, the top floor, or the 29th level, was once an observation deck. This feature provided panoramic views of Perth until it was closed to the public following the construction of taller skyscrapers in its vicinity, such as the BankWest and Central Park towers, which obstructed the once-unobstructed vistas.
