Anheuser-Busch Beer Depot, Omaha

The Anheuser-Busch Beer Depot is a historic commercial and industrial property connected with the growth of beer distribution and railroad commerce during the late 19th-century period. Designed by Omaha architect Henry Voss and constructed in 1887, the complex served as the regional distribution center of the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association of St. Louis.

Beer arrived by rail, was unloaded at a siding behind the property, stored in the beer vault, bottled on site, and distributed throughout Nebraska, western Iowa, and adjoining parts of Wyoming and South Dakota. Anheuser-Busch operated the depot until Nebraska approved prohibition in 1916. The original complex included an office, stable, beer vault and icehouse, wagon shed, loading areas, and a private cobblestone alley near the railroad tracks. Its architecture is best described as German Rundbogenstil with Victorian Romanesque influences, combining red pressed brick, round and segmental arches, corbelled brickwork, cut-stone trim, rounded brick corners, pilasters, and decorative metal details. Only the one-story office survives, containing reception rooms, offices, storage space, and basement bottling facilities today.

The surviving office illustrates the importance of brewing, wholesale trade, and rail transportation during a period of rapid commercial expansion. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 for its architectural quality and historical association with a operation. After the depot closed, the property was adapted for warehouse and office uses. Current redevelopment aims to incorporate the surviving building into an urban garden park while preserving its historic exterior.
