Old Market, Omaha

The Old Market is Omaha’s historic warehouse and entertainment district, known for its brick buildings, cobblestone streets, independent shops, restaurants, galleries, and cultural organizations. The area developed during the late 19th century as a center for wholesale produce, warehousing, and commerce connected with the city’s expanding railroad network.

Beginning in the 1960s, developer Sam Mercer and other preservation advocates restored older commercial buildings instead of replacing them, transforming the former market district into a pedestrian-friendly destination while preserving its historic character. Visitors encounter restored brick warehouses, cast-iron storefronts, courtyards, passageways, and cobblestone streets that reflect the district’s commercial past. Today, these buildings house independent boutiques, bookstores, antique and specialty shops, art galleries, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and other local businesses. Horse-drawn carriage rides and street performers remain familiar sights, especially during busy periods. Major cultural institutions include the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and KANEKO, both occupying adapted warehouse buildings and presenting changing exhibitions and public programs. The Old Market also hosts regular community and cultural events. The Omaha Farmers Market operates on Saturdays during its May-to-October season, while the monthly First Friday Downtown Omaha Art Walk links participating galleries and arts organizations.

Restaurants, nightlife venues, public art, and specialty retailers keep the district active throughout the day and evening. Its compact, walkable layout allows visitors to explore preserved commercial architecture while easily moving between shopping, dining, galleries, performances, and other attractions that make the district one of Omaha’s best-known cultural destinations.
