Antigua Aduana Marítima (Old Maritime Customs Museum), Ensenada
The Old Maritime Customs Museum is housed in one of the oldest still-functioning public buildings in all of Baja California. This historic Victorian-style structure has seen many chapters in Ensenada’s past. Originally constructed in England and shipped piece by piece to the port, the building was first used by an American company to sell land parcels in the area. Later, it served as Ensenada’s official Maritime Customs House, playing a key role in the city’s early development as a port town.
Today, the building has been transformed into a museum that preserves and showcases Ensenada’s rich maritime history. One of the main highlights is an exhibit on the legendary Manila Galleon, a Spanish trade ship that sank off the Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula between 1574 and 1576. The museum features historical data and fascinating artifacts recovered from the wreck, offering insight into the global trade routes of the 16th century and the treasures that passed through these waters.
Adding a modern touch to its historical displays, the museum also includes interactive games and exhibits, making it an engaging stop for visitors of all ages.
