Archaeological Museum, Tirana

The National Archaeological Museum in Tirana traces its origins back to its opening on November 1, 1948. Positioned as the first museum established in Albania after World War II, it occupies a strategic location to the east of Mother Teresa Square, near the University of Tirana. Since its inauguration, the museum has been dedicated to showcasing the extensive archaeological research conducted within Albania's borders.

The museum serves as a central repository for artifacts that span from prehistoric times through to the modern period. Its collections offer a window into the lives of the people who inhabited the region from as early as 100,000 BC to the independence of Albania in 1912. These artifacts encompass a broad spectrum of historical periods, including the Stone Age, Bronze and Iron Ages, the Illyrian Civilisation, Roman and Byzantine periods, and the era of Ottoman rule.

With over 2000 items on display, visitors can expect to encounter a rich array of exhibits ranging from intricate ancient jewelry and Roman statues to large clay pots adorned with shellfish, all unearthed during archaeological expeditions spearheaded by the museum. These objects not only narrate the story of Albania's ancient inhabitants but also highlight the museum's role in conducting and facilitating archaeological research throughout the country.

In addition to its extensive collections, the museum also boasts a library comprising approximately 7200 volumes, providing a valuable resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike. This library complements the museum's exhibits by offering in-depth literature on various archaeological and historical topics, further enriching the visitor experience.
