Art Rage Gallery, Syracuse
ArtRage Gallery, established in 2008 in Syracuse, is a dynamic space dedicated to progressive art with a social mission. Founded by Dik Cool and Rose Viviano of the Syracuse Cultural Workers, the gallery serves as a platform for artwork focused on social justice, environmental issues, and cultural change. It grew out of the work of the Syracuse Cultural Workers, who had long been producing art with themes of social activism. The gallery’s first exhibition, Combat Paper, highlighted its commitment to art as a catalyst for dialogue and action.
The gallery’s name honors Ruth Putter, whose generous donation enabled the renovation of its Hawley Avenue building in 2007. ArtRage operates with a vision of inspiring resistance through art, using exhibitions to challenge preconceptions and spark cultural change. In addition to showcasing art, the gallery partners with community organizations to offer exhibitions paired with related programming, such as films, lectures, and workshops. These events deepen the conversation around the themes presented and encourage collective engagement.
Now in its 12th exhibition season, ArtRage continues to grow, offering five exhibitions a season alongside occasional guest shows. It is a thriving arts hub, relying on a team of two staff members, a dedicated board, and passionate volunteers. The gallery’s mission remains focused on promoting social awareness and empowering local communities to use art as a tool for change and action.
With its unique blend of art, activism, and community collaboration, ArtRage Gallery is a vital cultural institution in Syracuse, supporting progressive movements and fostering social and cultural transformation.
