Art Theatre of Long Beach, Long Beach
The Art Theatre of Long Beach is a cultural cornerstone and the city’s last remaining single-screen independent cinema. Originally opened in 1924 as the Carter Theatre, it began as a silent movie house complete with an orchestra pit and pipe organ.
After the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, the building was redesigned in a striking Art Deco style, which still defines its restored façade today. Following a full renovation in 2008 based on the 1933 blueprints, the Art Theatre has continued to thrive, offering a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort.
Today, the theatre is celebrated for its over 100 years of carefully curated programming of independent, foreign, documentary, and first-run films. Visitors enjoy a distinctive cinematic experience complemented by a wine and coffee bar. Beyond screenings, the Art supports community and educational initiatives-hosting events such as the Q Film Festival, Cambodia Town Film Festival, and local filmmaker showcases.
