Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg

Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg (must see)

Assiniboine Park, previously known as City Park, is a sprawling park situated alongside the Assiniboine River in Winnipeg. The park's origins trace back to 1893 when the Winnipeg Public Parks Board was established, and in 1904, they acquired the initial land for the park. Although it was in partial use before this time, the park was officially inaugurated in 1909. Its name pays homage to the Assiniboine people, an indigenous group in the region. Encompassing a vast area of 1,100 acres (450 hectares), with 400 acres (160 hectares) specifically designed in the elegant English landscape style, Assiniboine Park offers diverse attractions and natural beauty.

Within the park, you'll find notable features such as the expansive 700-acre (280-hectare) Assiniboine Forest, the Assiniboine Park Zoo, the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, the historic Assiniboine Park Pavilion, meticulously crafted formal and informal gardens, a captivating sculpture garden, a charming miniature railway, an open-air theater for performing arts, and a host of other captivating sites.

One of the park's highlights is the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, spanning 1.2 hectares, dedicated to showcasing the magnificent works of Leo Mol. Unveiled on June 18, 1992, this enchanting garden has been expanded twice since its inception. Supported by private donations, it comprises a gallery, a renovated studio, and an outdoor exhibit. Leo Mol, a renowned artist, generously contributed 200 bronze sculptures to the city of Winnipeg. These captivating sculptures depict religious leaders, influential figures, the human form, and various wildlife species.
