Broadway First Baptist Church, Winnipeg

Broadway First Baptist Church, Winnipeg

Situated at the corner of Honeyman Avenue and Walnut Street, just a stone’s throw from Vimy Ridge Park, the Broadway First Baptist Church is one of Winnipeg’s enduring spiritual and architectural landmarks. This English Gothic-style brick building was originally constructed in 1906 for the Broadway Baptist congregation by Claydon Brothers Construction, based on a design by the Toronto firm Darling and Pearson. In 1914, it was expanded by local architects Lewis H. Jordan and Walter P. Over, giving it the form visitors recognize today. The church took on its current name in 1939 after merging with First Baptist Church.

The church is affiliated with the Canadian Baptist Ministries and the Baptist World Alliance. Known for its warm and inclusive community, Broadway First Baptist Church welcomes all who wish to explore faith, engage with Scripture, and reflect on how Christianity resonates in modern life.

The church maintains a traditional style of worship and places a strong emphasis on music. Its sanctuary resonates with the sounds of a grand piano, a handbell choir, a full vocal choir, and-most notably-a historic Casavant pipe organ originally housed in Winnipeg’s Tivoli Theatre. Music plays a central role in the life of the congregation, bringing depth and beauty to worship.

A bronze tablet, unveiled during a memorial service in 1920, stands inside the church in remembrance of those members of the congregation who died in the First World War-underscoring the deep historical roots of this faith community in the life of the city.
