Young's United Church, Winnipeg

Young's United Church, Winnipeg

Young’s United Church, located at the corner of Broadway and Furby in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighborhood, has been a cornerstone of community and faith for over 125 years. Its origins trace back to 1891 when the original Young Methodist Church-named after George Young-was built for $1,300. The first service was held in early 1892, marking the start of a parish that steadily grew in size and spirit over the decades.

The church building was designed in the Romanesque Revival style by renowned local architect James Chisholm. Construction began with the west side in 1906, followed by the eastern addition in 1910. In its early years, the church also ran a Young Church School (1908–1909).

A devastating fire on December 27, 1987, destroyed most of the church's structure. The only surviving feature was the impressive brick tower, which stands over 30 meters tall and remains a municipally designated historic site. Today, this Romanesque tower anchors the Crossways in the Common building-a multi-faith, multi-functional space that continues to serve the surrounding community.

Young’s United Church is more than a historic landmark-it is an active, affirming, and inclusive congregation. The church welcomes people from all parts of Winnipeg and beyond, embracing individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Rooted in a strong faith-based mission, the church works closely with local partners to advance social justice, affirm the dignity of all people, and build community.

With vibrant Sunday services known for stirring music and thoughtful preaching, Young’s United Church continues to be a place of hope, compassion, and outreach-just as it has been since its founding in the 19th century.
