Elim Chapel, Winnipeg

Elim Chapel, Winnipeg

Nestled in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, just across from the University of Winnipeg on Portage Avenue, Elim Chapel is a non-denominational church committed to fostering discipleship and community in the name of Jesus Christ. While its cold, grey exterior-tinged with subtle Gothic architectural flourishes-might evoke a sense of solemnity, the atmosphere inside is anything but. Elim Chapel radiates warmth, welcome, and a heartfelt openness that has drawn in generations of Winnipeggers, especially students, young adults, and families alike.

The origins of Elim Chapel trace back to 1910, when it was first established as the Ellice Avenue Mission. By 1913, it adopted the name “Elim Chapel,” drawing on the Hebrew word Elim, meaning an oasis-an apt metaphor for a space of rest, refreshment, and spiritual nourishment. From its beginnings, Elim has remained a Bible-believing, non-denominational church.

In 1927, Sidney T. Smith purchased the Portage Avenue building-originally designed in 1903 for Saint Stephen’s Presbyterian Church-which had undergone several denominational changes. Under Smith’s leadership, it became Elim Chapel and rose to prominence in the 1930s–40s as a center for visiting pastors and theologians.

Elim’s journey hasn’t been without trials. A fire in 1974 destroyed the sanctuary, prompting a reconstruction completed in 1977. Another fire in 1999 led to the rebuilding of the rear section, which now includes a Multipurpose Room, Staff Offices, and a Children’s Wing.

Despite these challenges, Elim Chapel has remained steadfast in its mission. Anchored in Scripture and driven by an enduring faith, it continues to serve as a spiritual home for all who seek truth, hope, and a relationship with Christ.
