Barockgarten mit Pavillon (Baroque Garden with Pavilion), Melk

As part of the Abbey Park, the Baroque Garden with Pavilion invites you into a world of classical design and historical intrigue, blending formal Baroque aesthetics with later, more naturalistic influences. As you enter, your eyes are drawn to the pavilion itself, an eighteenth-century treasure commissioned by Abbot Thomas Pauer and constructed between 1747 and 1748.

Designed originally as a space of refreshment and contemplation for the monks - especially following periods of fasting - the pavilion was conceived to create atmospheres that enveloped people fully. Inside, the walls and ceilings shimmer with frescoes painted by Johann Wenzel Bergl. These frescoes conjure an imaginative world of intertwined jungle plants, animals from distant lands, mythological figures, and allegorical scenes. The central ceiling, for instance, shows the sun surrounded by personifications of the four seasons, while the perimeter features representations of the four then-known continents.

Outside the pavilion, the garden is framed by roses, clipped hedges, and the formal geometry typical of Baroque gardens. The surrounding Abbey Park is organized on multiple levels and offers a rich tour of garden design evolution: beyond the pavilion you can wander through the Paradise Garden, the Mediterranean Garden, or the Oriental Garden - each a distinct “room” in living landscape art.

During the warmer months, the pavilion often hosts musical performances or summer concerts. Also, a small café inside the pavilion offers refreshments as you take in the frescoes and views.
