Stiftspark (Abbey Park), Melk (must see)

Entering Abbey Park feels like walking into a Baroque canvas, where art, nature, and spiritual themes merge in harmony. Set beside Melk Abbey, it forms an essential part of the monastery’s overall experience.

The park took shape in the 18th century, replacing the vineyards and orchards once used by the monks. Its design has shifted through changing garden fashions, periods of decline, and careful restoration, resulting in the landscape visitors see today.

Among its highlights is the Baroque garden pavilion, built between 1747 and 1748, later decorated with vivid frescoes. At its base, rose beds and centuries-old linden trees frame the structure, anchoring its ornate character within the greenery.

The layout unfolds across three terraces, symbolically mirroring features of the abbey itself, with pools, tree lines, and views directed toward the great dome. Recent restorations have also added new sections, including the Paradise Garden with Mediterranean influences and the Walafrid Strabo Garden.
