Melk Introduction Walking Tour (Self Guided), Melk

The well-known Italian writer Umberto Eco was seeking inspiration for his novel The Name of the Rose when he settled on Benedictine novice Adso of Melk as the story’s narrator. That choice was unexpected, to say the least-but Eco saw something others did not.

Melk is a town in Austria along the Danube, best known for its imposing Benedictine Abbey perched on a rocky outcrop above the river. The name "Melk" is first attested around 831 as Medilica, derived from a Slavic word meaning “border.” Over the centuries, the town’s identity became defined less by its name and more by the Abbey that dominates its skyline.

Long before the Abbey’s foundation, the location held strategic importance: Melk was a Roman garrison site guarding the Danube frontier. In the Middle Ages, the castle above the river-the Babenberg Castle-served as a residence for the Margraves of Austria. In 1089, Leopold II, Margrave of Austria, gifted the castle and church on the rock of Melk to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey, forming the nucleus of what would become Melk Abbey.

Over time, Melk developed around the Abbey, gaining market rights in 1227 and evolving into a center for tolls, customs, and guilds. The Abbey itself grew in influence and, during the 15th century, became the heart of the Melk Reform-a monastic revival movement that significantly influenced religious life in Austria and southern Germany.

In the 1700s, the Abbey was rebuilt in its current Baroque form. Despite political turmoil-Napoleonic wars, secularization, and later pressures under the Habsburg and Nazi regimes-the Abbey endured.

However, during World War II, Melk did succumb to the pressures of the time. The town became a center for weapons production and housed a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp; thousands of prisoners were forced to work there under harsh and inhumane conditions.

In Melk’s old town, you can stroll along narrow lanes edged by pastel merchant houses, admire the town hall with its ornate doors, and pause at the fountain in the central square. Gothic and Baroque churches, remnants of medieval walls, and the welcoming Restaurant Zur Post peek out from around corners. Above all, your eyes will be drawn to the Abbey-its twin towers and domed church soaring above the Danube and the surrounding hills.

Perhaps that’s what Eco saw in Melk when he chose Adso as narrator. From its elevated perspective, Melk seems to observe history differently. With this self-guided walking tour, so will you.
