Wiener Straße (Vienna Street), Melk

Vienna Street unfolds like a living thread linking the town’s medieval roots to its modern pace. Its name recalls its original function: as one of the principal roads pointing toward Vienna, it once met the Vienna Gate - a northern entrance to the city of Melk that no longer stands but lingers in the memory and maps of the old town.

As you walk, you’ll pass a patchwork of architectural eras: Baroque façades rub shoulders with late-historicist ornamentation and simpler, more recent houses that reflect everyday local life. Each building seems to tell a story of evolving tastes and periods.

One highlight along the street is the Wachauerhof Hotel & Restaurant, offering both lodging and a restaurant serving regional Austrian specialities. Just further along, stands the Episcopal Seminary Melk. Built between 1903 and 1905 in late historicist style, it features a grid-patterned façade, a raised central risalit, and a baroque-style chapel roof structure.
