Basilica de la Merced (Basilica of Mercy), Cordoba

Basilica de la Merced is a long-standing Catholic landmark linked to the Mercedarian order, present in the region since the early colonial period. Its convent was approved in 1601, and its devotion to Our Lady of Mercy later gained national meaning through General Manuel Belgrano’s tribute after the Battle of Tucumán in 1812.

The present building reflects several stages of renovation. A church is recorded here from 1697, while the façade was completed in 1869 by Italian architects Bettoli and Kánepa. Its twin towers, central image of the Virgin, and onion-shaped roofs combine Italian classicism with 19th-century eclectic design. Beside it, the old convent preserves an early 17th-century cloister, usually closed to visitors.

Inside, the basilica has three naves, columns, side altars, a long choir, and a dome above the crossing. Its 1776 Baroque pulpit, known for polychrome wood carving, is often ranked among Argentina’s finest. Other details include the Paraguayan cedar doorway, the late colonial altar, Armando Sica’s 1973 mosaic “La epopeya de Córdoba,” and its elevation to minor basilica rank in 1926.
