Marquis of Sobremonte Provincial Historical Museum, Cordoba
Marquis of Sobremonte Provincial Historical Museum is housed in one of the best-preserved colonial residences in the region. Built in the 18th century for the Spanish merchant José Rodríguez, the house later became associated with Rafael de Sobremonte, who lived here while serving as governor-intendant of Córdoba del Tucumán. Its survival is important because most urban houses from the same period were later demolished or heavily altered.
The building helps visitors understand how elite colonial homes were organized. Its plan follows Spanish colonial traditions shaped by Roman and Andalusian models, with rooms arranged around a sequence of internal courtyards. These patios separated different parts of daily life, including reception areas, family rooms, service spaces, storage, and work zones. Thick walls, tiled roofs, wooden elements, and handmade tejas musleras show the practical building techniques of the period.
Inside, the museum displays furniture, religious images, paintings, weapons, documents, silverware, ceramics, and household objects linked to colonial society. Some rooms show the contrast between wealth and basic comfort, with refined tableware and portable braziers used for heating. The visit also includes service areas and spaces connected with enslaved household workers, giving a fuller view of the people who maintained the residence. For tourists, the museum offers a direct look at colonial architecture, domestic life, social hierarchy, and the material culture of Spanish rule.
