Basilica di Santa Maria delle Vigne (Basilica of St. Mary of the Vineyards), Genoa
The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Vineyards stands as one of the city's oldest and most revered churches. Originating in the late 10th century-on a site once surrounded by vineyards, hence its name-the basilica was built around 980 by nobles Oberto Visconti and Guido di Carmandino, supplanting a much older religious chapel dating to the 6th century. It gained official recognition as a collegiate church by 1083 and was consecrated in 1117, signaling its arrival as a centerpiece of faith and community life.
Architecturally, the basilica is a rich tapestry of evolving European styles. Its tall Romanesque campanile-with bifore windows and an eight-sided spire-remains from the original structure, while the interior was dramatically transformed in the 17th century with Baroque renovations, including a vaulted ceiling, lavish chapels, and a grand dome. The Neoclassical marble façade, added between 1841–1848 and designed by Ippolito Cremona, gives the exterior its dignified, classical presence.
Stepping inside, visitors are immersed in one of Genoa’s most stunning Baroque interiors-gilded ceilings adorned with frescoes by Lazzaro Tavarone and Giuseppe Palmieri, elegant marble columns, and sculptural masterpieces such as Ponsonelli’s main altar and the 14th-century “Madonna of Life” statue set on green marble. The basilica also houses significant works by artists like Giuseppe Cades, Domenico Piola, and Giovanni Andrea Carlone, and is the resting place of composer Alessandro Stradella.
Elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1983, the basilica continues to host religious celebrations-especially for the Presentation of Mary on November 21-and attracts both pilgrims and heritage enthusiasts. Adventure-seeking visitors can even climb up to the dome and explore hidden passages above the nave, offering unique views and insights into the site’s layered history.

Genoa Introduction Walking Tour
Italian poet Petrarch called Genoa “The Superb One,” and quite fittingly so for a city that built its confidence the hard way-through ships, contracts, and a fierce sense of independence.

Rolli Palaces Walking Tour
At one point, back in 1576, when the Republic of Genoa was riding high on money, power, and confidence, the city faced a practical question: where do you put visiting kings, princes, and ambassadors? Genoa’s answer was very on brand. Instead of building one grand royal palace, they turned the entire local aristocracy into a hospitality network. The result was the lists of the public lodgings of... view more
