Beira Lake, Colombo

Beira Lake, Colombo

Beira Lake is a tranquil water body nestled in the heart of Colombo. Originally crafted by the Portuguese in the 1500s as a defensive moat, this historic lake has undergone significant transformations over the centuries.

Initially serving as a strategic barrier against local resistance, Beira Lake eventually became a focal point of colonial conquests. Following its capture by Rajasinghe I in 1587, the Dutch expanded its boundaries and constructed artificial islands, while the British, after their conquest, repurposed the area for social gatherings and celebrations.

Despite its diminished size, now covering approximately 160 acres due to urbanization, Beira Lake remains a peaceful retreat amidst the city's hustle and bustle. Popular among couples seeking a serene getaway, visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along its shores or partake in the iconic boat rides offered. Additionally, attractions like Lovers' Island and the Seema Malaka Temple provide further opportunities for exploration in this historic locale.
