Regal Cinema, Colombo

Regal Cinema, Colombo

Regal Cinema opened on July 26, 1930, and is one of the oldest cinemas still in operation. It marked 95 years in 2025 and continues to function as a regular movie theatre. Since its opening, it has remained part of everyday entertainment, rather than shifting into a museum-style venue. As of January 2026, it is still active under the Ceylon Theatres circuit and continues to attract a steady local audience.

The building is historically important for its Art Deco design, which was popular in the early 20th century. It was originally planned in a style closer to an opera house, with orchestra seating and a balcony, rather than a flat single hall. While the layout is practical, these early design choices are still noticeable inside. Over time, the cinema has been updated to stay usable, including the addition of air conditioning and Dolby Digital sound, but the overall structure reflects its original period.

Regal Cinema mainly screens Sinhala-language films, along with regular Tamil and English-language releases. Evenings and weekends are the busiest, with families, students, and office workers making up most of the audience. Ticket prices are lower than at luxury cinema complexes, keeping it affordable. A small snack counter sells items like popcorn and soft drinks. For visitors, a film screening here gives a simple view of local movie-going habits in a setting that still reflects its early design.
