Bell Tower, Chisinau

If you have just passed through the Holy Gates, look straight ahead toward the Nativity Cathedral. Standing between you and the cathedral, directly on the same central axis, is the elegant bell tower. It looks every bit as historic as the cathedral itself, and many visitors assume it is original. In reality, however, what you see here is a reconstruction.

The original belfry was built together with the cathedral in the 1830s and stood about 40 meters in front of it. Its design deliberately echoed the cathedral, with four levels, classical porticoes, and a small dome at the top. On the ground floor there was a chapel, while the bells occupied the upper section.

There’s an interesting story behind those bells. Shortly after the Russo-Turkish War of 1829, they were cast from the captured Turkish cannons. The biggest of them was so enormous, weighing up to 6.4 tons, that it proved too large for the belfry. In part, this was the reason the nearby Triumphal Arch was built - to house this giant bell.

Now, let's take another look at the tower. For more than three decades, this view simply didn’t exist. On the night of December 23, 1962, Soviet authorities demolished the belfry. An explanation given at the time was that the tower might serve as a firing position for snipers targeting government officials across the square. More broadly, however, its destruction was part of the Soviet anti-religious campaign of the Khrushchev era. Later, in the 1980s, a fountain was built on this site.

For older citizens like my grandparents, who knew the city before the tower was ruined, its absence was quite noticeable. After Moldova regained independence, the belfry was reconstructed based on historic photographs and images. In my family album, we also have such photographs, dating from the 1940s, with the original belfry still in place. The replica tower was completed and consecrated in 1998, restoring the old visual line between the Holy Gates, the belfry, and the cathedral.

Before moving on, walk a bit closer and explore the small chapel at ground level. It’s worth stopping here for a moment, because from this position you get one of the clearest views of how the whole cathedral ensemble was meant to fit together.
