Bizkaia Museo Arqueologico (Bizkaia Museum of Archaeology), Bilbao

Housed in a beautifully restored former railway station, this two-floor museum opened in its current location in 2008 and is dedicated to preserving, restoring, and making accessible the region’s archaeological heritage. With over 18,000 artifacts spanning the Paleolithic, Roman, medieval, and modern periods, it offers an accessible window into the lives of ancient inhabitants.

Among its most captivating exhibits is the Urbieta shipwreck, a 12‑meter wooden vessel dating to the 15th century, retrieved from the estuary of Gernika town-an extraordinary medieval maritime artifact that stands out even to younger visitors. The museum also features everyday items-stone tools, pottery, coins, keys-and even a small statue of the goddess Isis Fortuna, reflecting funerary beliefs and domestic life through the ages.

What truly elevates the experience is the integration of interactive multimedia: 19 touch‑screen displays offer immersive insights, while audiovisuals-such as a 4‑meter conical projection of prehistoric climates and a vivid reenactment of a warrior’s burial-bring the past to life in engaging ways.
