Bourne Hill House and Gardens, Salisbury

Bourne Hill House and Gardens is a historic estate with roots stretching back to the medieval period. The site was originally occupied by St Edmund’s College, founded in 1269, while the core of the present house dates from the 1670s and was later enlarged during the 18th century. It was long associated with the Wyndham family and reflects several centuries of architectural change.

The surrounding gardens contain features that reveal even older layers of the past. Earthwork remains from the 14th-century city ramparts survive within the grounds, offering a reminder of the area’s medieval defenses. Visitors can also see a Grade II listed stone porch dating from the 15th century, which was moved from Salisbury Cathedral in 1791 and incorporated into the landscape. Mature trees, open lawns, and walking paths create a pleasant setting while highlighting the site’s historical character.

In 1927, the estate was purchased by the local corporation and later adapted for public use. Following extensive restoration, the historic house was combined with a modern glass extension and now serves as offices for Wiltshire Council. The gardens remain a public park, combining green space with medieval remains, historic architecture, and modern design.
