Break Water Park, Kingston
Breakwater Park is a scenic waterfront park in the heart of downtown Kingston, located along King Street and connected to Ontario’s Waterfront Trail. Overlooking the vast expanse of Lake Ontario and Wolfe Island, the park offers some of the city’s most beautiful and unobstructed lakeside views, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
At the park’s entrance stands the striking Kingston City Statue, also known as the Time Sculpture. A gift from the Province of Ontario in 1973, this landmark sets the tone for a park that blends art, nature, and community. The park stretches along a winding shoreline and features a wide range of amenities designed to make the most of Kingston’s lakefront.
After undergoing major renovations completed in July 2018, Breakwater Park was revitalized with new life. Improvements included the addition of a promenade, pedestrian bridge, shade structures, upgraded pier, accessible water entry points, an upland beach, steps and seating, new landscaping, and expanded green space. One of the standout features is the Gord Edgar Downie Pier, which offers swimmers and sunbathers a safe and welcoming place to enjoy the water.
Breakwater Park is a rare blend of urban green space and lake access. It’s perfect for long walks, picnics on grassy hills, beach lounging, or simply listening to the soothing sound of waves. With shallow areas suitable for kids, spots for diving, and space for parasailing, it truly has something for everyone. More than just a park, it serves as a model for other Great Lakes cities on how to connect residents with their natural surroundings in healthy, engaging ways.
Whether you’re a swimmer, a walker, a reader, or a sun-seeker, Breakwater Park invites you to slow down, enjoy the lake, and be part of a shared community space that continues to shape the identity of Kingston.
