Busan Cinema Center, Busan
The Busan Cinema Center, an architectural marvel located in Centum City, stands as the official venue for the prestigious Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Not only does it host the festival's opening and closing ceremonies, but it also represents a symbolic and cutting-edge space for film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
Constructed at a cost of about US$150 million, the Busan Cinema Center officially opened its doors on September 29, 2011, after nearly three years of meticulous construction. The building itself is a testament to architectural excellence, earning the International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum in 2007.
Designed by the Austrian architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au and brought to life by Hanjin Heavy Industries, the Busan Cinema Center comprises three distinctive buildings: Cine Mountain, Biff Hill, and Double Cone. The Biff Theater, an outdoor venue, features the Small Roof, while Dureraum Square showcases the impressive Big Roof. This multi-faceted complex spans a vast area of 54,335 square meters, offering dedicated spaces for performance, dining, entertainment, and administrative functions.
The center's standout feature is its dual steel roofs, each with its own unique characteristics. The Big Roof spans an impressive 163 meters in length and 60 meters in width, featuring an 85-meter cantilever portion, all supported by a weight of 6,376 tons. Notably, this roof holds the Guinness World Record for the longest cantilever roof. Adding a captivating visual element to the architecture, the ceilings of both the Big and Small Roofs are adorned with LED lights.
