Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens

Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens (must see)

Originally named Villa Ilissia, this splendid mansion, designed in the Florentine style, was constructed during the 1840s for the Duchesse de Plaisance, a prominent figure in Athenian society during the mid-19th century and a devoted philhellene. In the 1930s, collector Geórgios Sotiríou transformed the house into a museum, where he reimagined the entrance as a monastic courtyard adorned with a replica of a fountain from a 4th-century mosaic found in Daphni. An innovative, split-level exhibition space has been created underground, beneath the courtyard.

The museum's collection is curated around five primary themes, including the role of women, burial customs, and golden artifacts, which are further divided into two sections. The first section, "From the Ancient World to Byzantium," prominently features fragments of decorative stone carvings and mosaics sourced from basilicas, sarcophagi, and early religious sculptures like the 'Shepherd Carrying a Lamb' and 'Orpheus Playing a Lyre', which vividly illustrate how the Christian church assimilated and adapted pagan symbols. In the second section, "The Byzantine World," visitors can explore a diverse array of icons, frescoes, and valuable ecclesiastical objects. Notable highlights include the Treasury of Mytilene, a remarkable collection of 7th-century gold and silver jewelry, coins, and goblets, as well as splendid frescoes rescued from the Church of the Episkopi.

Why You Should Visit:
Undoubtedly one of the finest places to explore Christian art. The extensive collections are displayed in beautifully arranged spaces, complemented by informative descriptions that offer valuable insights. Unlike some other museums where visitors might wander aimlessly through the halls, here, the path of sightseeing is clearly marked, ensuring a structured and engaging experience.
The outdoor setting exudes a peaceful and enchanting atmosphere, complete with a delightful café at the rear. During the summer months, the courtyard frequently hosts concerts, providing an additional layer of enjoyment for visitors.

Tips:
Make sure not to overlook the room featuring modern paintings just before you exit.
Additionally, consider purchasing a combined ticket with the National Archaeological Museum for excellent value.
