Calle Obispo (Bishop Street), Havana (must see)

Widely regarded as one of the busiest streets in Old Havana, Bishop Street runs through the historic city center. This lively pedestrian street is filled with shops, art galleries, hotels, restaurants, cafés, live-music bars, and a constant flow of locals and visitors. Its narrow layout and rows of four- and five-story buildings often block out the direct sunlight, giving the street its distinctive atmosphere and character.

The street takes its name from two bishops associated with it: Fray Jerónimo de Lara, who lived here in the 17th century, and Pedro Agustín Morell de Santa Cruz, who is said to have frequently passed along the street from his nearby residence. Over time, Bishop Street became one of Havana’s most important commercial streets.

One of its most notable buildings is the Ministry of Finance and Prices, located at the corner of Bishop Street and Cuba Street. In the early 20th century, this area formed part of Havana’s banking district, sometimes nicknamed the city’s “Wall Street.” Nearby landmarks include the elegant Hotel Florida and the famous Hotel Ambos Mundos. Hotel Florida stands directly opposite the Ministry of Finance and Prices, while Hotel Ambos Mundos is located farther east at the intersection of Bishop Street and Mercaderes Street.

Hotel Ambos Mundos is best known for its connection with Ernest Hemingway, who stayed in Room 511 between 1932 and 1939. During his time here, Hemingway worked on several writings and began “For Whom the Bell Tolls”. Today, Room 511 is preserved as a small museum, arranged much as it was during his stay, and can be visited on guided tours.
