Campo Santo Stefano (St. Stephen's Square), Venice
Saint Stephen's Square ("Campo Santo Stefano"), the largest square in San Marco, is a bustling intersection where visitors take a pause on their way to and from Saint Mark's Square ("Piazza San Marco"), while local children play freely. Its historical significance is evident, having hosted bullfights, masked balls, and Carnevale processions in the past. Today, it is adorned with palaces and inviting outdoor cafés, while the steps around it are often occupied by enthusiastic people-watchers. In the center stands a statue honoring Niccolò Tommaseo, a celebrated local writer who played a key part in the 1848 rebellion against the Austrians.
Despite its turbulent history, the 14th-century church of Saint Stephen ("Santo Stefano") exudes a remarkable sense of tranquility today. With its simple brick facade and ceiling shaped like a ship's keel, it houses notable works of art, including paintings by Tintoretto.
On the opposite side of the square, you'll find the Church of San Vidale, which hosts classical concerts every evening, with Vivaldi's compositions often gracing the repertoire. At the southern end of the square, the austere-looking Pisani Palace overlooks the delightfully small square of the same name. The building has functioned as the Conservatory of Music since the 19th century, with enchanting melodies flowing from its open windows, bringing a harmonious ambiance to the surroundings.

Venice Introduction Walking Tour
Venice is a city that learned early how to live with water-and, ultimately, how to profit from it. Built across hundreds of small islands in a shallow lagoon in the northern Adriatic, it runs without roads, relying solely on canals and bridges. Although the lagoon itself formed thousands of years ago, it was inhabited mainly by fishermen up until the 5th century AD, when waves of barbarian... view more

Casanova's Venice
Giacomo Casanova is usually introduced as history’s most famous seducer-but that shorthand misses the point.
