Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, Ottawa

Located in Ottawa, the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum stands as a prominent national agricultural museum. Situated within the Central Experimental Farm, the museum encompasses multiple buildings and functions as a "working farm." Its primary purpose is to provide the public with informative programs and exhibitions on agriculture sciences and the rich history of agriculture in Canada.

The museum's origins can be traced back to 1920 when a museum was established at the Central Experimental Farm. However, it wasn't until October 1983 that the federal government officially inaugurated the national agriculture museum, initially known as the Agriculture Museum. Starting in a dairy barn, the museum gradually expanded its premises to include various other buildings within the Central Experimental Farm.

Positioned within the Central Experimental Farm, which serves as a research center for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the museum takes residence in multiple government-owned buildings. The main structure, referred to as the "Dairy Barn" stands as a three-story stone and wood edifice. Initially constructed in 1887-88 and reconstructed in 1913 after a devastating fire, this building received recognition as a Federal Heritage Building in 1987. Within its walls, visitors can explore exhibition spaces and observe a dairy herd.

As a "working farm," the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum offers a range of programs and exhibitions delving into the history of agriculture in Canada and highlighting the numerous benefits and connections to agricultural sciences. Within the expansive Central Experimental Farm, visitors can witness the museum's demonstration farm, featuring approximately 150 farm animals. This includes a 50-head dairy herd, horses, beef cattle, pigs, goats, poultry, and sheep. Alongside the agricultural history exhibits, the museum also houses an extensive collection of historical tractors.
