Casa da Música (House of Music), Porto
The House of Music (Casa da Música) is a striking concert hall located in Porto, celebrated for its innovative design by the renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Officially opened in 2005, the building was conceived as part of the celebrations marking Porto’s designation as the European Capital of Culture in 2001. Notably, it is the first structure in Portugal purpose-built to serve as a dedicated space for music, encompassing public performances, artistic training, and creative endeavors.
The construction commenced the same year on the site of a former tram terminus at the Boavista roundabout, and after four years of meticulous work, the venue was inaugurated on 15 April 2005. Its design, featuring an eye-catching asymmetrical polyhedron shape with large glass windows and white cement plaques, stands out amid the traditional architecture of Porto, evoking the image of a ship marooned on an expansive marble plaza.
The House of Music is a celebrated architectural landmark, ranking alongside Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum and Disney Concert Hall. Its 1,300-seat auditorium, highlighted by two glass walls, enhances its distinctive look and sound. The venue hosts innovative performances, including multimedia concerts by the Porto National Orchestra and workshops for individuals with special needs.
Set back from Porto's major thoroughfares, the House of Music’s isolated position and bold design present a deliberate contrast to the city’s neoclassical elements, such as the nearby Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square (Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque) and the towering Heroes of the Peninsular War monument. This juxtaposition underscores its role as a modern landmark, challenging the traditional architectural narrative and asserting itself as a beacon of cultural innovation in Porto.
Tip:
Book a place on a one-hour guided tour. It will take you everywhere in the building – and it's worth it!
If it's not raining, the small hidden open terrace on the rooftop (also housing the restaurant) can be beautiful.
If you're lucky enough to coordinate visiting Porto with a concert (tickets can be bought online), you have a complete experience.

Porto Introduction Walking Tour
Set along the Douro River in northern Portugal, Porto is one of those places where history, trade, and identity overlap at every turn. Even the name carries weight. Back in Roman times, this was Portus Cale, meaning “the port of Cale” (in which Cale refers to today's Galicia region). Over time, the name shifted to Portucale, and from there… the term “Portugal” was born. So, yes,... view more
