Casa Museo Rafael Nuñez (Rafael Nunez House Museum), Cartagena
This historic mansion was the home of Rafael Nunez, born in Cartagena in 1825. Nunez famously led the Regeneration political movement that took place in Colombia in the 19th century. He was elected four times as the country's president. In 1850, Nunez wrote a poem to celebrate the independence of Cartagena. In the 1880s, the words became adapted into the lyrics for the National Anthem of Colombia.
The grand two-story house, built in the 19th century, features Antillean Creole-style architecture. It is painted white with a red-tiled roof and features an attractive wrap-around balcony and covered front porch. There is also an inner courtyard that is lush with palm trees. Original period furnishings decorate the rooms inside the house. There are also exhibits of Nunez's writing and personal objects.
