Casa Ordeig (Ordeig House), Valencia

Ordeig House in Valencia’s Market Square is a building that clearly did not believe in blending quietly into the background. Designed in 1907 by Francisco Mora, it came into being as a private residence for a well-to-do local owner — because back then, a respectable bourgeois address clearly needed a little architectural flair and a touch of drama...

Its style mixes Valencian Modernism with Neo-Gothic details, which is a polite way of saying the building couldn’t quite choose between elegance, medieval fantasy, and decorative confidence — so it went for all three. Look up at the façade, and you’ll see tripartite windows, slender columns, carved details, and a fine balcony on the third floor, all carefully arranged as if the building were posing for a formal portrait.

Then comes the tower. Rising above the façade, it brings in battlement-like pillars, small rose windows, and modernist sgraffito decoration. The wrought-iron railings soften the whole composition with leafy motifs, just in case the stonework was getting a little too serious...

Some details also nod to the nearby Silk Exchange, borrowing Gothic inspiration, while adding Valencian symbols of abundance. Keep an eye out for the corbels showing farmers carrying fruit — a playful reminder that, in Valencia, even stonework knows its way around a fruit basket...

Turn the corner onto Ramilletes Street, and the show continues. The same modernist patterns and Neo-Gothic battlements wrap around the side, proving this was not a “good façade only” situation. Ordeig House is a vivid evidence that, in early 20th-century Valencia, a private residence could easily become a small public spectacle — part home, part artwork, and part architectural peacock.

Valencia’s Old Town is the sort of place where the Romans, Moors, medieval merchants, Gothic builders, Baroque decorators, and modern shoppers all seem to have comfortably found their place (albeit at different times). Beneath today’s squares, Roman streets and forum remains sit quietly underground, while above them, the city’s Islamic-era street plan still winds and twists, refusing to...  view more

Among the city’s many architectural personalities, contemporary design...  view more

Valencia Introduction Walking Tour

Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city, has been around since 138 BC, when it was founded by the Romans as a colony for battle-tested veterans. Known then as Valentia, which means “valor,” it honored the courage of its first inhabitants. The city was destroyed in 75 BC by Pompey the Great, but was rebuilt within a century, later becoming home to Visigoths and then the Moors, who transformed...  view more
