Iglesia de los Santos Juanes (Church of St. John), Valencia

Right in the bustle of Valencia’s Market Square, wedged between the Central Market and the historic Silk Exchange, the Church of Saint John has long played a central role in the city’s religious and cultural life. Merchants, worshipers, tourists, and pigeons with strong opinions—this church has seen them all...

Built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier mosque, it also has seen multiple rebuilds over time—because medieval Valencia, like many old cities, had a habit of rewriting its buildings rather than starting with a blank page. Fires and general wear and tear brought major renovations in the 14th and 16th centuries, adding Gothic features to the structure. Later, around the year 1700, came a sweeping Baroque makeover that gave the church much of the theatrical flair we see today.

The façade draws the eye with its rich sculptural detail. At the center is a niche with the Virgin of the Rosary, shown with the Christ child resting one hand on a globe, surrounded by rays of light, angels, and cherubs. Higher up, a clock tower rises between two statues: one of Saint John the Baptist, identified by the lamb, and the other of John the Evangelist, symbolized by an eagle. At the very top, you will find the famous weather vane known as the “Saint John’s Sparrow,” adding a final touch.

Inside, the artistry continues. The ceiling is decorated with frescoes by Antonio Palomino, filled with imagery celebrating the Church Triumphant. Along the walls, thirteen plaster statues represent Jacob and the twelve tribes of Israel, each one carefully modeled and rich with symbolism.

Officially declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1947, the Church of Saint John has survived changing fashions and the daily commotion of one of Valencia’s busiest squares. Yet, thanks to ongoing restoration, it is still holding up rather well—which, after several centuries in the public eye, is more than many of us can boast of...

The city was destroyed in 75 BC by Pompey the Great, but was rebuilt within a century, later becoming home to Visigoths and then the Moors, who transformed...  view more
