Castelo Aselmeyer, Naples
The Aselmeyer Castle is a historical building designed by the Anglo-Neapolitan architect Lamont Young. It is situated on Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Naples, within the Chiaia district. Originally, in 1899, the plan for this location involved constructing a hotel adjacent to the Grifeo Park, following the acquisition of the land for a new city road. Over time, additional adjacent land was acquired to create internal courtyards within the palace.
The actual construction of the building took place in 1902, initially intended as a personal residence. Two years later, it changed hands and was purchased by banker Carlo Aselmeyer, as Lamont Young had relocated to the island of Gaiola by that time. Subsequently, the interior of the building was subdivided, resulting in multiple private apartments within.
The Aselmeyer Castle stands as an excellent representation of neo-medieval architecture in the city of Naples. It incorporates various elements that reflect the architect's personal experiences, along with distinctive "Elizabethan" and "Tudor" influences. The project combines elements from English Gothic architecture, including pointed arches and prominent towers, to give the castle a medieval ambiance.
Additionally, the choice of materials used in constructing the castle is noteworthy. The exterior facade, composed of two lateral towers, is entirely adorned with Vesuvian stone ashlars, while the interior features wood in various elements such as ceilings, floors, walls, stairs, and doors.
