Playa del Carmen, often referred to simply as “Playa,” is a renowned resort city on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Originally known as Xaman-Ha, meaning “waters of the north” in the Maya language, the area has a rich history dating back to pre-Hispanic times, when it served as a Maya pilgrimage site. Despite the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, it remained sparsely populated until the 20th century, when a small community of fishermen and coconut growers emerged. In 1908, a chicle-producing company obtained a concession to exploit the surrounding forests, contributing to the establishment of the settlement of Playa del Carmen, or “Carmen’s Beach.” Its present name honors Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the town’s patron saint.

By the mid-1980s, Playa del Carmen was still a small community with fewer than 1,500 residents. In the following decades, however, tourism brought rapid development and transformed it into one of Mexico’s fastest-growing cities. Its attractive coastal setting has also made Playa del Carmen a filming location for various television productions.

The downtown area centers on busy Fifth Avenue, a pedestrian thoroughfare lined with shops, clubs, cafés, and restaurants. Another focal point is Founders Park, where visitors can learn about local traditions while enjoying scenic views of the Caribbean Sea.
