Chapel of Saint Maria Formosa, Pula

The Basilica of Saint Mary Formosa dates from the 6th century. Although it is an important early Christian monument, only its southern chapel, designed in the shape of a Greek cross, survives intact today. Commissioned by Archbishop Maximianus of Ravenna, the chapel is a notable example of Byzantine architecture in Istria.

The original basilica had three naves separated by rows of columns. This rhythm was reflected on the exterior through the arrangement of the perimeter walls, windows, and blind arches. The sanctuary contained three polygonal apses and was flanked by two side chapels. Of these, only the southern chapel is fully preserved, while much of the northern chapel has been incorporated into nearby residences.

The exterior is relatively plain, decorated with shallow pilasters, blind arches, and semicircular windows. In 1605, during a Venetian raid on Pula, many valuable objects were removed from the basilica. These reportedly included alabaster columns that now stand behind the high altar of Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
