Chateau d’Eau Photographic Gallery, Toulouse
The Water Tower, nestled near Cours Dillon by the iconic Pont-Neuf in Toulouse, is a historical landmark that has been transformed from a 19th-century water tower into one of the oldest and most revered photography galleries in the world. Originally constructed in 1825 and used as a water pumping station, this unique structure was converted into a photographic gallery in April 1974, spearheaded by Jean Dieuzaide, a celebrated French photographer from Toulouse, and supported by the photography association "Cercle des XII".
Today, the Water Tower Photographic Gallery stands as the first public gallery in France exclusively devoted to the exhibition of photography and the second oldest photographic institution globally, following the Nicéphore-Niépce Museum. The gallery is renowned for its rich blend of exhibitions that feature both emerging and established photographers. Its programming is both ambitious and balanced, with the gallery hosting up to ten exhibitions annually across two separate spaces-one for established artists and another for emerging talents.
The Water Tower Photographic Gallery offers a vast library with over 15,000 volumes covering ancient and contemporary photography, including rare books, DVDs, VHS videos, 35mm slides, and magazines. It also houses a permanent collection of around 5,400 photographs, supporting numerous exhibitions each year. Participating in Toulouse's local contemporary art festival and hosting six seasons of exhibitions annually, the gallery attracts about 30,000 visitors during major shows. Additionally, it has produced over 330 monographs and event posters.
Since its inception, the Water Tower Photographic Gallery has hosted exhibitions of some of the greatest international photographers, beginning with Robert Doisneau in 1974. Its continued commitment to showcasing high-quality photography has solidified its status as a pivotal cultural institution in France, widely recognized and respected on an international level.
