Chatillon-DeMenil Mansion, Saint Louis

Chatillon-DeMenil Mansion is a historic house museum that reflects the architectural and cultural development of the mid-19th century. The residence was begun in 1848 by fur trader and Oregon Trail pioneer Henri Chatillon as a modest brick farmhouse.

In 1856, it was purchased by Dr. Nicolas DeMenil, a French-born physician, who expanded the house between 1861 and 1863 with the help of architect Henry Pitcher, transforming it into an elegant Greek Revival residence while incorporating the original structure. The mansion remained in the DeMenil family until 1928 before later being preserved as a museum. The exterior is one of the finest surviving examples of Late Greek Revival architecture in the Midwest, featuring a symmetrical façade, a monumental portico, tall windows, and fluted Ionic columns. Inside, visitors can explore restored parlors, bedrooms, dining rooms, and Victorian-era furnishings that illustrate 19th-century domestic life. Original woodwork, marble fireplaces, decorative plaster ceilings, and family artifacts help preserve the atmosphere of the historic residence.

Today, the mansion operates as a museum offering guided tours, educational programs, and seasonal events that explore the lives of the Chatillon and DeMenil families, local history, and 19th-century architecture. Exhibits also examine the property's unique history, including the natural caves beneath the site and the community efforts that saved the house from highway demolition in the 1960s. Through its restored interiors and historical collections, the museum provides insight into the architectural and cultural heritage of the region.
