Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli (Church of the Holy Apostles), Venice

Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli (Church of the Holy Apostles), Venice

Journeying towards the eastern end of the Strada Nova, past the inconspicuous Santa Sofia church, lies the Holy Apostles Square ("Campo dei Santi Apostoli")-a significant crossroad for pedestrians heading towards the Rialto or the railway station. Anchoring the crossroads is the Holy Apostles church, a structure that has undergone numerous renovations, notably in the 18th century.

Within the expansive interior of the church lies a remarkable feature, the enchanting late 15th-century Renaissance Corner Chapel. Believed to be the creation of the esteemed Mauro Coducci, it is positioned gracefully on the right side, stealing the spotlight with its intricate design. The altarpiece boasts the exquisite "Communion of Saint Lucy", a mesmerizing work of art painted by Giambattista Tiepolo in 1748. As you explore further, you will encounter inscriptions paying homage to Caterina Cornaro, former Queen of Cyprus, whose final resting place was originally here before being relocated to San Salvatore. Noteworthy as well is the tomb of her father, Marco, situated on the right side, possibly sculpted by Tullio Lombardo. Marvel at the intricate plaque depicting Saint Sebastian's head in the adjacent chapel to the right of the chancel, another testament to Lombardo's skillful artistry.

Tip:
If you're in search of a spot to satisfy your thirst, make sure not to overlook the nearby El Sbarlefo. Despite its peculiar name, which means "smirk" in Venetian, you won't find any shortage of smiles at this lively and welcoming bacaro. Here, you'll discover an extensive wine selection that matches the abundance of mouthwatering 'cicchetti' available. The assortment of delectable bites is truly diverse! Additionally, on Fri/Sat nights, you can often enjoy live jazz and blues performances, adding a delightful ambiance to your experience.
