Chiesa di San Moise (Church of St. Moses), Venice
As the parish church for Saint Mark's, the Church of Saint Moses (Chiesa di San Moisè) serves as an alternative place of worship due to the bustling crowds at the basilica. While it is one of the oldest churches in Venice, dating back to the 8th century (as evidenced by the old tower on the right), its facade showcases opulent Baroque decorations from the 17th century.
During that period, patrons funding such projects sought recognition and had their portraits prominently featured. Over the entry door, you can spot the bust of Vincenzo Fini, flanked by the tombs of his brother and nephew, who are entombed within the facade itself (!). This strategic placement allowed Mr. Fini to circumvent Venice's ban on public statues, showcasing his wealth and newly acquired status in the Libro d'Oro, the Venetian aristocracy.
In keeping with Byzantine influence, the Venetians considered Old Testament prophets as revered saints. Thus, the figure of Moses (Moisè) is prominently featured atop the church's facade. Inside, the altarpiece portrays Mount Sinai, with Moses depicted in a kneeling position as he receives the two tablets bearing the Ten Commandments. Adjacent to the altar, an alcove houses Tintoretto's masterpiece from the 16th century, "Christ Washing the Disciples' Feet."

Around Rialto Bridge
The Rialto district represents the earliest urban and commercial core of Venice that has shaped the city’s identity for centuries. Long before grand palaces lined the canals or empires were managed from marble halls, this was the practical heart of the lagoon. Its name comes from Rivo Alto, meaning “high bank,” a rare patch of ground that stayed relatively dry and therefore attracted... view more

Venice Introduction Walking Tour
Venice is a city that learned early how to live with water—and, ultimately, how to profit from it. Built across hundreds of small islands in a shallow lagoon in the northern Adriatic, it runs without roads, relying solely on canals and bridges. Although the lagoon itself formed thousands of years ago, it was inhabited mainly by fishermen up until the 5th century AD, when waves of barbarian... view more
