CHIJMES, Singapore

CHIJMES, Singapore

CHIJMES, short for Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School, is a historically significant architectural complex situated in Singapore. Its origins trace back to a Catholic convent known as the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ). You can find this complex along Victoria Street, right in the heart of the Downtown Core within Singapore's central business district.

This Catholic convent, established in 1852, grew to include important structures: Caldwell House (1840-1841), Convent Orphanage (1855), Holy Infant Jesus Chapel (1904), and a hotel complex for the girls' school (1933). Caldwell House is now a wedding venue, and the Gothic-style chapel, CHIJMES Hall, is a National Monument serving as a function hall and wedding venue.

In 1996, the complex underwent restoration to repurpose it for commercial use. Today, it functions as a vibrant hub for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Visitors can explore an array of ethnic restaurants, shops, and a versatile function hall, making it a sought-after location for musical performances, recitals, theatrical shows, and weddings.

One of the unique aspects of the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus is its architectural design, which creates a self-contained city block in Singapore. The complex comprises various buildings showcasing different architectural styles and periods, intentionally designed to maintain aesthetic diversity. These structures are arranged around courtyards and open spaces, thoughtfully landscaped and enclosed with walls that harmonize with the urban environment.

The design of the various buildings aims to provide appealing exterior spaces for its occupants. Until November 1983, these spaces were used for church school activities until the school relocated. Since then, the entire block has been repurposed for public use, establishing itself as a prominent landmark in the Central Area of Singapore.
