Christ and St. Luke's Church, Norfolk

Christ and St. Luke's Church, Norfolk

The church originated from the Elizabeth River Parish, founded in the late 1630s, which makes it the oldest Episcopal congregation in Norfolk. Over the centuries, this lineage evolved through successive congregations-“Christ Church” in 1800 and “Saint Luke’s” in 1872-eventually merging in 1935 to become Christ and Saint Luke’s, reflecting over three centuries of continuous worship and adaptation.

Constructed in 1909–1910, the current building is a masterful example of English Perpendicular Gothic Revival. Its long, narrow plan is executed in rough-faced random ashlar stone and crowned by a four-stage tower with battlements and pinnacles. Inside, the richly carved Newton Memorial reredos rises behind the altar, featuring statues of church dignitaries and evangelists, while the nave features statues honoring the enduring legacy of faith, including figures such as Saint Monica, Saint Hilda, and even Pocahontas.

Beyond its architectural allure, Christ and Saint Luke’s is known for its musical tradition-thanks to an organ richly rebuilt and acoustics that regularly host concerts and performances. In recent years, restoration efforts thoughtfully preserved the original sanctuary and stained-glass windows while upgrading accessibility. In 1952, an extension known as Lloyd Hall was added to the rear of the curch providing space for classrooms, offices, and a multi-purpose auditorium.
