Church Road Winery, nestled in the heart of Hawke’s Bay, is one of New Zealand’s oldest wineries, with origins dating back to 1897. It was originally founded by Bartholomew Steinmetz, a Luxembourg émigré who arrived to make wine for the Marist Brothers’ Catholic Mission - now known as Mission Estate Winery. Over the decades, Church Road has evolved from its missionary roots into a renowned name in New Zealand’s winemaking scene, known for marrying tradition with innovation.

Today, Church Road Winery is guided by the vision of Chief Winemaker Chris Scott, who began his journey there in 1998 as a cellar hand. His deep knowledge, honed through hands-on experience and formal study in wine science, has shaped the winery’s distinctive style. Appointed Chief Winemaker in 2005, Scott’s philosophy is grounded in traditional techniques that enhance the rich flavours and textures of premium Hawke’s Bay fruit. His dedication has earned him the title of New Zealand Winemaker of the Year multiple times, solidifying Church Road’s reputation for excellence.

The winery’s flagship TOM range pays tribute to Tom McDonald, a pioneering figure in New Zealand viticulture, and reflects both the unique terroir of the region and the winery’s commitment to producing wines only in exceptional vintages.
