Back in 1915, Cité Hellemans, named after the visionary architect Émile Hellemans, marked a significant milestone as the city of Brussels ventured into large-scale social housing projects. This structure, an exquisite example of Art Nouveau design, provided a home to numerous families and set the stage for a series of similar housing developments that would follow throughout the 20th century.

Today, the Marolles stands as a testament to diversity and multiculturalism, attracting both residents and visitors to its vibrant daily flea market at the Place du Jeu de Balle (Ball Game Square) – a nod to the lively ball games played there in the 19th century.
