The Closerie des Lilas traces its origins back to 1847 when François Bullier opened it as a modest brasserie. Initially named after a theatrical work by Frédéric Soulié, the venue gradually adopted its current name, inspired by the lilac flowers Bullier planted on the premises. Over time, what began as a simple gathering spot evolved into a landmark of Parisian café culture, reflecting both the city’s social rhythms and its artistic ambitions.

The Closerie des Lilas became closely associated with a remarkable circle of writers, artists, and thinkers who frequented its tables. Figures such as Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Paul Sartre, and James Joyce found in it a place to work, debate, and observe Parisian life. Hemingway, in particular, contributed to its literary aura, using the café as a workspace while writing for the Toronto Star. By the early 20th century, especially between the two world wars, the establishment had modernised, embracing an Art Deco style and a more refined atmosphere.
