Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse, Portland

Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse, Portland

The Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse is the principal federal courthouse for the District of Oregon. Completed in 1997 and designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates with local architects, the 16-storey building rises 318 feet (97 metres) and was later named after longtime U.S. Senator Mark O. Hatfield. It contains courtrooms, judges’ chambers, jury facilities, and offices for several federal agencies.

The design combines Indiana limestone, glass, and steel, with a light-filled central atrium and a curved glass tower inspired by a traditional campanile. Legal and philosophical quotations are carved into limestone walls in parts of the building. Separate circulation systems allow the public, judges, court staff, and defendants in custody to move through the courthouse securely.

Before construction, a full-scale courtroom prototype was used to test sightlines, acoustics, and furniture placement. Archaeological excavations also uncovered nineteenth-century artefacts from earlier buildings on the site, some of which are displayed in the lobby. Public artworks, fountains, and landscaped spaces add further interest, while visitors may enter accessible areas during business hours after security screening.
