COPE Visitor Centre, Vientiane (must see)
COPE Visitor Centre is an educational space that explains the effects of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos and the work done to help people injured by it. It was opened in 2008 as part of an organization that provides prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation support. During the Indochina War in the 1960s and early 1970s, large amounts of bombs were dropped across the country. Many did not explode and still remain in the ground today, especially in rural areas. The centre helps visitors understand how this continues to affect daily life.
Inside, there are several rooms with simple displays, photos, and short films. These show how UXO accidents happen and why they are still a risk, particularly for farmers and children. Visitors can also see real bomb casings and fragments that have been collected. Personal stories are an important part of the visit. Survivors explain what happened to them and how they have adjusted after their injuries.
Another part of the centre focuses on medical care and rehabilitation. It shows how prosthetic limbs are made and fitted, and how patients learn to use them. There are also examples of crutches, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids. Some displays explain how children need new prosthetic limbs as they grow, which means ongoing support is needed over many years.
There is also a small shop and a café, where money from sales helps support COPE’s work. Many visitors spend time watching films or reading the information panels. The centre gives a clear and direct look at how past conflict still affects people and how support programs help them recover and continue their daily lives.
