Cosmos, Yekaterinburg
Cosmos Cinema and Concert Hall is a large cultural complex opened in 1967. It was created during the Soviet period as a centre for both film and live performance. At a time of strong interest in science, progress, and mass culture, the venue was planned on a scale larger than a standard cinema. From the start, it combined film screenings, concerts, and public events in one building.
The architecture follows late Soviet modernist ideas, with clear geometric forms, large interior spaces, and careful attention to acoustics and sightlines. The main concert space, known as the “Big” hall, seats 1,924 people and remains the core of the complex. Several smaller cinema halls allow different programmes to run at the same time, including regular releases, festivals, and special screenings.
The complex also includes a restaurant and bar, encouraging visitors to stay longer rather than attend a single event. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. Accessibility is fully provided, includes wheelchair-accessible entrances, adapted restrooms, designated seating, and accessible parking. Today, Cosmos continues to function as an active cultural venue and shows how a large Soviet-era public building has been adjusted for modern use without losing its original purpose.
