Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, Dallas
The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, previously the Dallas Holocaust Museum, is located in the historic West End of Dallas, at the corner of N. Houston Street and Ross Avenue. It educates about the Holocaust and promotes human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. The museum features climate-controlled archives and a research library to enhance educational initiatives. Its current facility was inaugurated on September 18, 2019. The Museum's permanent exhibition comprises four wings designed by Berenbaum Jacobs Associates: the Orientation Wing, Holocaust/Shoah Wing, Human Rights Wing, and Pivot to America Wing.
The Museum tour begins in the Orientation Wing with a brief film raising key questions about the Holocaust and human rights. Visitors then explore the history of anti-Semitism, Hitler's rise, and glimpses of pre-Holocaust Jewish life in Europe via a photo mural. The tour continues on the third floor.
The Holocaust/Shoah Wing delves into the Holocaust's history, showcasing 68 local Survivor testimonies, 9 original films, a geographic approach to the subject matter, and a focus on Upstanders across Europe. A notable highlight is the opportunity for visitors to walk through an authentic Nazi-era rail car, the first ever displayed in a museum worldwide.
The Human Rights Wing highlights global progress in human rights, starting with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also covers the impact of the Nuremberg Trials and features the Ten Stages of Genocide Gallery, showcasing historical genocides like the Rwandan Genocide, the Guatemalan Genocide, and the Holodomor in Ukraine.
The Pivot to America Wing invites visitors to engage with American ideals, confront reality, and participate in repair efforts. Explore the American experience, ideals, and ongoing reconciliation efforts. Learn about civil and human rights progress through interactive kiosks and meet Upstanders who drove change. The journey ends with a Call to Action, urging individuals to embrace ideals, confront reality, and actively participate in repair, with opportunities to connect with activities and organizations to make a difference.
The Museum also houses a 250-seat theater for special events, presentations, and video testimonies from local Holocaust Survivors.
