DB Museum Koblenz, Koblenz

If you’re visiting Koblenz and have even a mild interest in trains, engineering, or industrial heritage, the DB Museum Koblenz is a must-stop. Located in the Lutzel district, the museum is housed in the former goods wagon repair works (Ausbesserungswerk) of Koblenz-Lutzel, built in 1905 as part of the freight yard and locomotive depot complex. Freight wagons continued to be repaired there until 1995; since 2001, the site has been transformed into the first satellite location of the Nuremberg DB Museum.

Inside, visitors can wander through halls filled with historic locomotives, passenger carriages, and freight wagons-some from the steam age, others representing electric power’s rise after World War II. The collection includes examples of the iconic German electric locomotive classes (e.g., 103, 110, 140, 150), as well as special historic vehicles such as salon cars (including the Goebbels special train salon coach) and unique wagons from both pre-1930s and post-war eras.

For visitors, the DB Museum does more than just display artifacts. There are interactive exhibits, models, simulator setups, and open-air vehicle displays, all of which help bring the story of rail transport in Germany to life-not only its machines, but its social and technological impact.

Train lovers, families with kids, or anyone curious for something different in Koblenz will find this museum a lively, hands-on window into Germany’s railway past. Located close to the city centre, it fits neatly into a half-day visit while still offering enough detail to keep you engaged for hours.

Local legends say that one 16th century robber stuck out his tongue before being executed. Instead of finding this event grim, Koblenz residents made the cheeky robber a symbol, nowadays immortalized in the shape of a little boy's statue.
